She is currently working on a series for Marvel, which kicked off with Loki: Where Mischief Lies. In 2019, she was named one of Forbes’ 30 under 30 for her work in bringing minority narratives to historical fiction and non fiction.

First of all, thank you so much for answering our questions. Mackenzi Lee, you’ve wrote some of the most iconic books in the YA genre, but not only that. Lately your book Loki has been translated for the Italian readers by Mondadori. But how did the journey with the shapeshifting god start?
With a very exciting phone call from my agent asking if hypothetically I would like to write for Marvel! My editor at the time had pitched a project that had finally been approved—a YA series about anti-heroes of the Marvel Universe as teenagers. And she just happened to be reading my book, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, at the same time and thought I would be a perfect fit for the project. It was good luck and good timing!
Prima di tutto, grazie mille per aver risposto al nostro appello. Mackenzi Lee, hai scritto alcuni tra i libri YA più iconici, ma non solo. Ultimamente il tuo Loki è stato tradotto per i lettori italiani da Mondadori. Ma come è cominciato il tuo percorso con il dio mutaforma?
Con una telefonata molto emozionante da parte del mio agente che mi ha chiesto se mi sarebbe piaciuto, in via ipotetica, scrivere per la Marvel! Il mio editor di allora aveva proposto un progetto che finalmente era stato approvato: una serie YA sugli anti-eroi dell’universo Marvel, ma adolescenti. E proprio in quel momento le è capitato di leggere il mio The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, e ha pensato che sarei stata perfetta per il progetto. Insomma, un mix di tanta fortuna e di ottimo tempismo!
How does your novel fit into the Canon? We know that the Loki you describe is probably the youngest we’ve ever come across. Is there an inspiration from other Loki stories?
I read a lot of other Loki stories when I was starting to work on the novel—both in and out of Marvel. I read Norse myths. I read early Marvel comics. I read other novels in which he appears. I actually got so caught up in trying to make all of these versions of Loki come together in my book that it took me a long time to find my version of him. I had to let go of a lot of other creators’ work to bring my own vision to him. My Loki is definitely younger than he’s been in his other appearances in the Marvel canon, so he’s much more unformed. He is grappling with his role in his family, in Asgard, in the Nine Realms, and reckoning with the fact that he has great potential to create good or evil—but he isn’t yet sure which he’s going to choose.
Il tuo romanzo dove si colloca all’interno del canone? Sappiamo che il tuo Loki è probabilmente il più giovane che conosciamo. Ti sei ispirata ad altre storie con Loki protagonista?
Mentre mi apprestavo a iniziare il romanzo, leggevo molte altre storie su Loki, dell’universo Marvel e non. Ho letto i miti norreni. Ho letto i primi fumetti Marvel. Ho letto altri romanzi in cui compare. A dirla tutta ero così impegnata a tentare di fare una sintesi di tutte queste versioni di Loki per il mio libro che mi ci è voluto un bel po’ prima di trovare la mia versione. Ho dovuto lasciarmi alle spalle gran parte del lavoro di altri autori per darne la mia interpretazione personale. Il mio Loki è decisamente più giovane che in altre apparizioni nel canone Marvel, perciò è molto più immaturo. Sta venendo a patti con il suo ruolo in famiglia, ad Asgard, nei Nove Regni, e sta facendo i conti con un grande potenziale con cui fare del bene o del male… ma non è ancora sicuro che cosa sceglierà.
How did you manage to keep everything in canon? Did Marvel help you with that? We can imagine that Loki, as the God of Mischief himself, must be a character that likes to have a will of his own. Was it hard to follow the “rules”?
It was hard! But Marvel was very helpful. They have people on their staff whose entire job is to keep track of the canon, so I could email any questions I had to them. I don’t know what I would have done otherwise!
Come sei riuscita a mantenere la coerenza col canone? La Marvel ti ha aiutato? Possiamo immaginare che a Loki, il dio dell’inganno in persona, piaccia fare di testa propria. È stato difficile seguire “le regole”?
È stato difficile! Ma alla Marvel sono stati di grande aiuto. Alcuni membri dello staff si occupano esclusivamente di controllare il canone, perciò per qualsiasi dubbio mi bastava scrivergli via mail. Non so cosa avrei fatto altrimenti!
Talking about Loki, you describe him as a teenager (even though Asgardian Time System is more wibbly wobbly than ours) competing with Thor for the throne. Odin hasn’t made is choice yet, and at the same time something is going on in Victorian London, somebody suspects foul play, and the shadow of a Jack-The-Ripper alike murderer is causing havoc. Not quite a walk in the park! How fun was to write about him?
It was fun eventually but at first it was so stressful! Loki has such a huge fanbase to whom the character is so important. I wanted to do him justice, and make sure that my addition to his story was worthy of the work that had come before mine. I look up to so many of the writers who have shaped Loki for Marvel over the years, and I have always dreamed of writing for Marvel, so I felt the pressure. But once I started bringing things I love into the book—like Victorian England, true crime, humour—it started to feel more like mine and I started to relax and have more fun. But it took some time!
Parlando di Loki, lo descrivi come un teenager (anche se il concetto di tempo ad Asgard è più wibbly wobbly del nostro) in competizione con Thor per il trono. Odino ancora non ha fatto la sua scelta, e allo stesso sta succedendo qualcosa nella Londra vittoriana, forse si tratta di omicidi, e l’ombra di un assassino simile a Jack lo Squartatore crea scompiglio. Non è proprio come bere un bicchier d’acqua! Quanto ti sei divertita a scrivere?
È stato divertente, alla fine, ma all’inizio è stato così stressante! Loki ha tantissimi fan che gli danno una grande importanza. Volevo rendergli giustizia, ed essere sicura che la mia aggiunta alla sua storia fosse degna del lavoro che ha preceduto il mio. Ammiro una gran parte degli scrittori che durante gli anni hanno dato forma a Loki per la Marvel, e ho sempre sognato di scrivere per la Marvel, quindi ne sentivo la pressione. Ma una volta che ho iniziato a infilare nel libro quello che mi piace, l’Inghilterra vittoriana, il true crime, lo humour, ho iniziato a sentirlo mio, a rilassarmi e a divertirmi di più. Ma c’è voluto del tempo!
Shapeshifting, fluid, not afraid of telling people who don’t understand him that they need not to care, because it makes sense for himself, Loki is truly one of a kind. Apart from the Marvel Canon, which was the source of your writing? Did you go full Indiana Jones looking into Norse mythology?
I definitely started with that, then got overhwlemed with all the information and trying to work it all into my book, so I ended up throwing a lot of the mythology reading I did out the window. I did go much more Indiana Jones in learning about Victorian England—and particularly the incredibly strange, morbid, fascinating culture around death and crime at the time. I could read about that for years.

A parte il canone Marvel, quali sono state le fonti per il tuo romanzo? Ti sei fiondata nella mitologia norrena come una novella Indiana Jones?
Ho cominciato proprio da lì, poi sono stata sopraffatta da tutte quelle informazioni e dal tentativo di sistemarle nel libro, così alla fine ho fatto piazza pulita di buona parte di quelle letture. Mi sono trasformata in Indiana Jones nel fare ricerca sulla Londra vittoriana, soprattutto per quanto riguarda l’assai bizzarra, grottesca e affascinante cultura che all’epoca ruotava attorno alla morte e al crimine. Avrei potuto leggerne per anni.
Loki, like other deities (Zeus we are looking at you), has not been confined by the social norm. Looking at the mythology, he’s got a horse as a kid; he can be either man or women and he can love both; how important was to you to describe his sexuality, or actually let people know that this was canon even before the word canon applied?
It is so important to me to bring explicit LGBTQ representation into everything I do, because everywhere there are people, there are queer people. It’s long past time queer people were superheroes, gods, super villains, historical heroes, mythological beings. Loki is a character that has always had elements of queerness to him, even in his earliest incarnations in the Norse myths. Now that we have the vocabulary and understanding of human sexuality and gender identity to make it explicit, I think it’s so important to. And Asgard is a fictional realm—it doesn’t make sense that they would adhere to our same ideas about gender and sexuality. The book is fantasy, and my fantasy is inclusive. Like Theo says in the book, it’s nice to imagine that somewhere out in the cosmos, there is a place where queer people can live without fear or persecution or feeling like an outsider.
Loki, come altre divinità (Zeus, ti stiamo guardando), non è limitato dalle convenzioni sociali. Nella mitologia, ha per figlio un cavallo, può essere uomo o donna e amare entrambi; quanto è stato importante, per te, parlare della sua sessualità, o meglio, far sapere alle persone che questi dettagli facevano parte del canon prima ancora che la parola canon venisse utilizzata?
Per me è molto importante contribuire in modo esplicito alla rappresentazione LGBTQ in tutto quello che faccio, perché le persone queer esistono, e sono ovunque. È ora che le persone queer siano supereroi, divinità, supercriminali, eroi della storia, creature mitologiche. Loki è un personaggio che ha sempre avuto un che di queer, perfino nelle prime incarnazioni nei miti norreni. Ora che abbiamo il vocabolario e la comprensione necessaria per rendere esplicite la sessualità umana e l’identità di genere, penso sia fondamentale farlo. E Asgard è un regno immaginario, è impensabile il fatto che le loro idee su genere e sessualità siano uguali alle nostre. Il libro è fantasia, e la mia fantasia è inclusiva. Come dice Theo nel romanzo, è bello immaginare che da qualche parte nel cosmo ci sia un posto dove le persone queer possono vivere senza paura o essere perseguitate, o sentirsi fuori posto.
Talking about the translation for Mondadori, how did it all happen? Did you have any kind of correspondence with the translator, Francesca Giulia La Rosa?
I didn’t! I usually don’t get to talk to the translators of my books. I just got a very exciting email from Marvel one day listing all the languages Loki was going to be translated into. It was thrilling! Seeing my books in other languages is a career highlight. It will never not be exciting.
Passando alla traduzione del romanzo per Mondadori, com’è successo? Hai avuto qualche forma di corrispondenza con la traduttrice, Francesca Giulia La Rosa?
No! Di solito non comunico coi traduttori dei miei libri. Un giorno ho ricevuto un’entusiasmante mail da Marvel dove venivano elencate tutte le lingue in cui Loki sarebbe stato tradotto. È stato strepitoso! Vedere le traduzioni dei miei libri è un traguardo lavorativo. Non smetterà mai di essere emozionante.
It seems like readers all over the world loved your rendition of Loki; Were you expecting it? Or were you afraid, having to work on such a huge character?
I knew there would be a reaction, because the Loki fans are very active and vocal, but I was definitely afraid. I’m delighted the response has been so positive. When it came out in English, I had made peace with the fact that everyone who read it would bring their own history with the character, so long as I was proud of what I did, that was enough. Getting such a positive fan reaction was a bonus!
Sembra che i lettori di tutto il mondo abbiano amato la tua versione di Loki. Te lo aspettavi? O hai avuto paura, dovendo lavorare su un personaggio così importante?
Sapevo che ci sarebbe stata una reazione, perché i fan di Loki sono molto attivi e rumorosi, ed ero decisamente spaventata. Sono contenta che la risposta sia stata così positiva. Quando è uscito in inglese, ero venuta a patti col fatto che ciascun lettore avrebbe avuto sul groppone una storia tutta sua col personaggio, ma finché sarei stata orgogliosa del mio lavoro mi sarebbe andata bene lo stesso. Ricevere una reazione così positiva da parte dei fan è stato un bonus!
We know that Loki is just one of three books of the deal you signed with Marvel. Can we have a little sneak peak about what is going to happen next?
I can’t talk much about it yet!!! But I’m so excited. It’s about another anti-hero in the Marvel universe as a teenager, figuring out who they are and what they stand for. It’s much more sci if than Loki, so I got to create an entire world, which I’ve never done before and I loved. I pulled inspiration from the place I grew up in the western United States, as well as the wild west history, mining, steampunk, as well as some of my favourite movies and books, like the Mortal Engines, Mad Max, Hadestown, True Grit. It was the most fun I’ve ever had writing a book.
Sappiamo che Loki è solo uno dei tre libri che fanno parte del contratto che hai firmato con Marvel. Possiamo avere una piccola anticipazione su quello che ci aspetta?
Non posso parlarne molto, non ancora! Ma sono così emozionata. Si tratta di un altro antieroe adolescente dell’universo Marvel, che cerca di capire chi è e per cosa combatte. È molto più sci-fi di Loki, mi sono trovata tra le mani un mondo intero da costruire, cosa che non ho mai fatto prima ed è stato fantastico. Mi sono ispirata al posto in cui sono cresciuta, negli Stati Uniti dell’ovest, alla storia del wild west, ala corsa all’oro, alo steampunk, e anche ad alcuni tra i miei film e i miei libri preferiti, come Macchine Mortali, Mad Max, Hadestown, True Grit. Non mi sono mai divertita tanto a scrivere un libro.
Working on an established canon might be frightening, but also very exciting! The opportunity to give a unique twist on something you’ve been loving for so long must be so great. We know you love Star Wars; would you be up for writing Star Wars novels too? Any other canon you’d like to work on?
My dream as a kid wasn’t to be a writer, but to be a writer of Star Wars novels (which was almost all I read) so I’m pretty sure I would die of happiness.
Lavorare su un canone così affermato può essere spaventoso, ma anche molto eccitante! L’opportunità di contribuire in modo originale a una tua passione di lunga data dev’essere molto soddisfacente. Sappiamo che ti piace Star Wars: ti piacerebbe scrivere dei romanzi su Star Wars? Ti piacerebbe lavorare su altri franchise?
Il mio sogno da bambina non era diventare una scrittrice, ma diventare una scrittrice di romanzi su Star Wars (che erano quasi l’unica cosa che leggevo) quindi sono sicura che morirei di felicità.
In this time of emergency, we tend to look to the future to imagine what could possibly change. How do you think the whole entertaining industry will change? Do you think this emergency will have an impact on storytelling?
In addition to writing, I work as a bookseller, and have continued to help out with our online business while we’ve been closed to browsing. It has been amazing to see how much people need and want stories even more during this time of crisis. Some people want stories to escape reality, some want stories to help them deal with reality, but I think stories give us hope that things in life that feel like they don’t make sense have a purpose, and an end. I don’t know how it will change the industry, but I think it has made it apparent how vital stories are.
In questo periodo d’emergenza, tendiamo a guardare al futuro per immaginare cosa potrebbe cambiare. Come pensi che cambierà l’industria dell’intrattenimento? Pensi che quest’emergenza avrà un impatto sulle narrazioni?
Oltre a scrivere, lavoro come libraia, e ho continuato a lavorare online durante la chiusura al pubblico. È incredibile scoprire quanto le persone vogliano e abbiano bisogno di storie, ancora di più in questo momento di crisi. Qualcuno le vuole per evadere dalla realtà, altri invece vogliono storie che li aiutino a sopportarla, ma io credo che le storie ci diano la speranza che le cose nella vita che ci sembrano non avere senso in realtà lo abbiano, e che abbiano anche una fine. Non ho idea di come cambierà l’industria, ma penso che sia ormai chiaro quanto le storie sono fondamentali.
